The true and the false mercy

A)  The text of the speech by J.M.Bergoglio:

“….. But the separation from his son is only physical; for the father always carries him in his heart; trustingly, he awaits his return; the father watches the road in the hope of seeing him. And one day he sees him appear in the distance (cf. v. 20). But this means that this father, every day, would climb up to the terrace to see if his son was coming back! Thus the father is moved to see him, he runs toward him, embraces him, kisses him. So much tenderness! And this son got into trouble! But the father still welcomes him so” (Angelus – Saint Peter’s Square – Fourth Sunday of Lent, 6 March 2016)

B) References to Scriptures:

And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; because he has looked upon the humiliation of his servant. Yes, from now onwards all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his faithful love extends age after age to those who fear him” (Luk 1:46-50)

C) Comment:

The Father forgives and welcomes his son because he sees in him a feeling of deep and true repentance, that makes possible and actual His mercy. Without this feeling, the Father would not have forgiven his son but He would have casted him out.

This is the Truth and this is what makes possible the implementation of true and infinite mercy of the Father to the children who have sinned.

Without this predisposition on part of the children, there can be no mercy. “Go and sin no more” Jesus said to the adulteress. Mercy is not free but must be achieved with the will to sin no more, changing life and definitely moving away from sin; It can never be separated from the faith that leads to sin no more.

The separation of the Father from His son, who became a sinner, is not only physical, as Bergoglio says. Sin separates from God. Sin interrupts the state of grace. In sin we are separated from God, until we repent, we convert and finally change our lives.

For this, Bergoglio’s teaching is deceptive and misleading. Bergoglio said that the mercy of God is independent of faith; that “salvation is given, it is free“; that “God forgives everything and God always forgives“; that “Jesus is free, salvation is free“; that “God saved us freely and the essence of salvation does not come from doing good“; that “What God likes most is to forgive His children“; that “The devil … is the only one that we are sure he is in hell“; that “I have so many bad things inside me. It is better! Better!“; that “Do not worry, you’ve made a big mistake, yes, but do not worry“; and then “How many, by choice, live in objective state of error, continue to be the object of the merciful love of Christ“. All these statements are incompatible with the authentic teaching that comes from God. They are misleading and lead to living a false mercy that does not lead to salvation but to eternal perdition.
It is helpful, about true and false mercy, to remember once again what St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori stated in this regard:
“In two ways the devil tries to deceive the man to make him lose his soul, after sin, he tempts him to despair with the rigor of divine justice, but before sinning encourages him to sin hoping in the divine mercy.
He makes much more slaughter of souls with this second deception than with the first. “God is of mercy“. Here is the answer of obstinate sinners to who invites them to convert. “God is of mercy.” But as the divine Mother sang: “His mercy is on those who fear Him (Luke 1, 50)” The Lord shows mercy to those who fear to offend Him, not to those who use His mercy to revile him more.
God is of mercy“. God is merciful, but He is still right.
Sinners would only want Him merciful, but not just; but this is not possible, because if God would always forgive and never chastise, He would lack of justice”
(St. Alphonsus, from the Way of health, Abuse of God’s mercy).

Jesus said to Giuseppina Norcia:
The pure person rejects all evil and impurity. For those who live in sin, grace cannot intervene because in the soul of the person there is always a reaction. We have to escape everything that causes discomfort in our hearts. Let us remember, therefore, that in sin we are separated from God. Jesus wants to reign for Love, wants to be the only King of the human heart. The soul in grace feeds of God and is always the live Temple of the Highest“.
