“God saved us freely … and the essence of salvation does not come from doing good”

A)  The text of the speech by J.M.Bergoglio:

The apostle … «defended the doctrine, was the great defender of the doctrine, and these people who did not tolerate the doctrine caused him annoyance». What doctrine? «The gratuitousness of salvation. God has saved us for free and saved us all».
…«do good, do the things that Jesus tells us to do, is good and should be done»; yet «the essence of salvation does not come from this. This is my response to salvation which is free, it comes from the love of God that is free»
” (Homily, Casa Santa Marta, October 15, 2015)

B) References to Scriptures:

As a body without a spirit is dead, so is faith without deeds” (Jam 2:26)

Since there is only one God; he will justify the circumcised by their faith, and he will justify the uncircumcised through their faith. Are we saying that the Law has been made pointless by faith? Out of the question; we are placing the Law on its true footing” (Rom 3:30-31)

Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives you lead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounce you as criminals” (1Pe 2:12)

C) Comment:

Once again Bergoglio returns on a key point of his teaching, which states that salvation is free. But Jesus and the Apostles teach the opposite.

Jesus and the Apostles teach us that salvation is an achievement, and we have to earn it.

First point. One must first have faith in Christ and recognize Him as the only Saviour of the world. One cannot confuse Christ with Buddha or Mohammed or with what the Hindus believe in.

Christ is the Son of the living God, incarnated. Others are not. This is the substantial difference. Differently, God the Almighty Father would not have manifested Himself in His Son in human form.

Second point. Consequently, who believes in Christ, acts as true children of Christ, putting into practice His authentic teachings.

From this you can recognize the true children of God from those who, while saying it and professing themselves as such, in reality they are not.

Those who call themselves Christians and despise and ridicule Jesus on the Cross and insinuate the doubt that Jesus on the Cross may have blasphemed the Father; and state that on the Cross Jesus “has made Himself as a snake, ugly to make you sick“, can they ever truly love Jesus? They can make the unwary believe so, but not to those who truly love Jesus and His sacrifice on the Cross.

“For such men are false Apostles, workers of deceit, making themselves seem like Apostles of Christ. And it is no wonder; for even Satan himself is able to take the form of an angel of light. So it is no great thing if his servants make themselves seem to be servants of righteousness. In the end they will get what they deserve”. (2 Cor 11,13 to 15).
