The thought of Bergoglio at the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

A)  The text of the speech by J.M.Bergoglio:

St Paul also bears witness to a similar understanding of what happened on the road to Damascus in his First Letter to Timothy: “I thank him who has given me strength for this, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful by appointing me to his service, though I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and insulted him; but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (vv. 12-14). The superabundant mercy of God is the sole rationale upon which Paul’s ministry is founded, and it is at the same time what the Apostle must proclaim to all people. ………
Beyond the differences that still divide us, let us recognize with joy that at the origin of Christian life there is always one call whose maker is God himself. Let us move forward on the path to a full and visible communion among Christians not only when we come closer to one another, but above all as we convert to the Lord, who out of grace chooses us and calls us to be his disciples. To convert means to allow the Lord to live and work in us. That is why, when Christians of different Churches listen together to the Word of God and seek to put it into practice, they take important steps toward unity. It is not only the call that unites us; we also share one mission: to declare to all people the wonderful deeds of God. Like St Paul, and like the faithful to whom St Peter writes, we too cannot but proclaim the same merciful love that has conquered and transformed us. As we move towards full communion, we can already develop many forms of collaboration, to go together and collaborate in order to foster the spread of the Gospel. By walking and working together, we realize that we are already united in the name of the Lord. Unity is achieved on the journey” (Celebration of Vespers on the solemnity of the conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle – Homily in the Basilica of St. Paul outside-the-walls Monday, 25 January 2016)

B) References to Scriptures:

For the tradition I received from the Lord and also handed on to you is that on the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and after he had given thanks, he broke it, and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ And in the same way, with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’ Whenever you eat this bread, then, and drink this cup, you are proclaiming the Lord’s death until he comes. Therefore anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily is answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone is to examine himself and only then eat of the bread or drink from the cup; because a person who eats and drinks without recognising the body is eating and drinking his own condemnation. That is why many of you are weak and ill and a good number have died” (1Co 11:23-30)

I am writing all this not to make you ashamed but simply to remind you, as my dear children; for even though you might have ten thousand slaves to look after you in Christ, you still have no more than one father, and it was I who fathered you in Christ Jesus, by the gospel” (1Co 4:14-15)

C) Comment:

The true and only authentic Christian Unity is accomplished in the Spirit that proceeds from the Father and from Christ and manifests itself uniquely in the Church of Christ. The true unity is not done only in a “human” path, to be done together, where humanly gets together trying to find an “agreement”, a “compromise”, sacrificing the REAL PRESENCE of Christ among people.

To encourage the spread of the Gospel” it is not enough to “walk together and collaborate“, as claimed by Bergoglio. The true Christian Unity is accomplished by placing Christ at the center of any project of union: the Real Presence of Christ among people. This value is not negotiable. This principle is unquestionable. The Real Presence of Christ is not tradable for any human union. If for going with the others, one has to sacrifice the essence and the substance of Life, better to be alone. Better alone than in bad company. Far from going together, walking together.

Respecting the others is fine. Having to go, always and anyway, with the others, renouncing, always and anyway, to Christ and His Sacrifice, is not good!

“He descended from Heaven, here among us, He will give us back His dignity, He descended from Heaven to give us His Heart, a kingdom of Peace and a world of Love”.

Does Bergoglio believe that Christ is really present? He should kneel before Christ! He should bow before Christ! He should bow down and worship Christ, for the Immaculate Mary!

The true collaboration among Christians must occur by welcoming and recognizing, before all, the real presence of the Spirit and of what the Spirit has revealed. Protestants do not believe in the transubstantiation; they do not believe that Christ is really present, but only symbolically. This difference is substantial. What Gospel can be preached together if there is not agreement on the most important thing of all?

On this fundamental point, is founded the true union among Christians, among all those who recognize the REAL PRESENCE OF CHRIST among people.

Can there be real collaboration in taking the Gospel to all, if the Real Presence of Christ, living Bread descended among people is not recognized? If it is not recognized that through the Work of the Holy Spirit, through His Real Presence, Christ is the Living Bread among people, how can we bring the same Gospel, even among Christians?

The not authentic Christians do not believe in the Real Presence of Christ. They believe that it is a symbolic presence, not a real one. The same Gospel cannot ever be brought with those who do not believe what is basic for a true Christian. Christ is the living Bread descended from heaven and is REALLY PRESENT through the Work of the Holy Spirit.

Christ is really present where the Holy Spirit that sanctifies Is.
All this takes place only and only in the Church where the Holy Spirit is present and manifests Itself, that is now manifested in a unique Church, in the Church of Christ, in the Church with which the Father has renewed His Covenant in the Spirit of Christ: His Universal Christian Church.
